Kindergarten food drive blesses local food pantry

The kindergarten students at Timothy Christian School completed a month-long food drive on Dec. 11, concluded with a delivery to a nearby church.
The third annual initiative combined math skills with discussions about Jesus and His example of loving and caring for others, said teacher Lorraine Groot.
“Running a food drive puts all of this into practice,” she said.
Students begin by making flyers and posters advertising their food drive. Then they decorated collection boxes to hold the food donated by the school community. Then came food retrieval, sorting, counting and stacking — all completed by the junior and senior kindergarten classes. The food drive concluded with the “big sort,” said Mrs. Groot.
Total food count was 237 items. ‘Canned food’ was by far the frontrunner, totalling over half of the collection.
Dec. 11 was delivery day. Mrs. Groot’s van was loaded by students, who then walked to nearby Rexdale Alliance Church to help stock the food pantry.
The food marked a much-needed donation before the Christmas holidays, said David Lewis, lead pastor of Neighbourhood Connections Church — a ministry of Rexdale Alliance Church. “This is a double joy,” he said. “In a practical sense, the donations greatly help in keeping our shelves stocked, but it is also a blessing to see the young children taking ownership of this initiative and learning the real meaning of helping the less well off.”
