Fifty-four teams from Christian schools in Ontario (some coming all the way from New York State, as well) traveled to Bowmanville earlier this month, for Knox Christian School’s (KCS) 20th annual Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The event began on Friday afternoon, with girls and boys teams gathering for dinner at KCS before competing in games scheduled at various gym locations around Bowmanville.
School and church communities engaged in the tournament in a variety of ways. Knox Grade 8 students offered concession stands at each gym location to raise funds for their annual class trip to Ottawa. The Maranatha CRC youth group provided a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning for teams and local families, with proceeds going towards a mission trip. The Durham Christian High School volley ball team provided referees for the weekend and raised funds for their trip to the OFSSA competition.
Local volunteers, who have been involved in the tournament for many years, coordinated the schedules for the event, while nearby churches and families hosted teams that needed to stay in town for the night. A strong sense of community typically underlies the Invitational Volleyball Tournament, and this year was certainly no exception.
