On Friday, October 18, the Toronto Cohort met at TDChristian in Woodbridge where we welcomed a few new members to our group. George Petrusma led us in devotions by sharing what his first six weeks of school looked like. He reminded us that what happens is rarely what we expect! But no matter what is going on, our goal as principals is to be a blessing, to surround ourselves with others, and to continually pray.
Peter Schuurman, Executive Director of Global Scholars Canada, led us in a discussion on the book, “Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership.” He started by asking us what the weather is like in our schools. What’s the climate? People shared many different weather types. We were reminded that we are in the transformation business.
As leaders, we lead from our soul—the innermost part of who we are. Being in touch with God needs to be part of our leadership. We need to listen to God with all of our senses. We need to remember to use quiet, joy, and beauty to see that things can be better. Solitude and silence are important. We need others but we also need time alone. What do you do to strengthen your soul? We need solitude in our lives to listen to God. Our soul needs the connection with the Father.
Our time ended with small groups discussing the following questions that may be of help to all Christian leaders across this province:
- How is the state of your soul’s connection to God affecting the strength of your leadership?
- Were you prodded to change any habits today?
- Where do you need to say “yes” and where do you need to say “no?”
- Have you ever tried 30 minutes of silence?
- What might be the next steps for your spiritual journey into the love and calling of God on your life?
Our next meeting on November 22nd will be a virtual lunch & learn session, where we will welcome Annette Stephenson to talk about mental health.
