Four Day Courses

Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (K-4)

Tuesday, July 2 - Friday, July 5, 2019

Learn to create safe and joyful learning communities where every student can thrive—while helping your students develop strong social and academic skills. In four engaging and interactive days, you’ll discover how to:

  • Begin and end the day positively with Morning Meeting and closing circle 
  • Integrate energizers and interactive learning structures throughout the school day 
  • Teach students how to complete academic tasks, interact with classmates, and maintain routines with Interactive Modeling 
  • Establish rules with your students and provide positive structures to support success 
  • And much more

No prerequisite. Suitable for grades K – 4.

Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (5-8)

Tuesday, July 2 - Friday, July 5, 2019

In this interactive and engaging four-day course, you’ll learn how to design and implement a middle school experience that’s responsive to the developmental strengths and needs of young adolescents—while helping your students develop the academic and social skills they need to be successful. Topics will include:

  • Creating a safe, positive, and inclusive community with the Responsive Classroom approach to discipline
  • Holding Responsive Advisory Meetings—a core practice for middle school
  • Using teacher language to encourage student engagement and help them become more responsible and respectful
  • Applying new strategies for effective classroom management
  • And much more

No prerequisite. Suitable for grades 5 – 8.

Additional Single Day Workshops

Responding to Misbehaviour 

Monday, July 8, 2019

We’ve all been there: power struggles, defiance, meltdowns—all those particularly thorny behaviors. Learn effective strategies for understanding, addressing, and reducing challenging behavior in the classroom.

  • Deepen understanding about the Responsive Classroom approach to discipline 
  • Identify how a teacher’s leadership style impacts student behaviors 
  • Utilize Responsive Classroom publications and resources to address common and problem behaviors Identify strategies to address emotional outbursts and meltdowns 
  • Consider the impact of stress on student behavior and create plans to address needs associated with stress

Prerequisite. Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (the course taken during July 2-5, 2019 and any previous completion of this 4-day course qualifies).

Who should attend this workshop: Educators interested in learning more about how the Responsive Classroom approach can help them respond to misbehaviours.

Improving Teacher and Student Language

Tuesday, July 9, 2019

Words are the foundation on which teaching, learning, and relationships are built. This workshop gives you the opportunity to assess, reflect upon, and improve both teacher and student language in your classroom in order to deepen academic engagement and learning.

  • Assess and build on previously learned Responsive Classroom teacher language skills
  • Explore ways that language impacts conditions for learning
  • Develop a plan for growth in use of teacher language
  • Identify ways to teach core speaking and listening skills and support students’ practice of these skills

Prerequisite. Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (the course taken during July 2-5, 2019 and any previous completion of this 4-day course qualifies).

Who should attend this workshop: K-8 educators who are interested in deepening their understanding of language use and its impact on the classroom.

Cost*

Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (K-4) - Affiliates: $1,200; Non-Affiliates: $1,500

Responsive Classroom Course for Elementary Educators (5-8) - Affiliates: $1,200; Non-Affiliates: $1,500 

Responding to Misbehaviours - Affiliates: $125, Non-Affiliates: $200.
A $50 discount will be given to educators who enrol in the 4-day course and this workshop.

Improving Teacher and Student Language - Affiliates: $125, Non-Affiliates: $200.
A $50 discount will be given to educators who enrol in the 4-day course and this workshop.

Please note due to the high cost of these workshops, there will be NO REFUNDS. Substitutions will be allowed.
