The educational landscape is constantly changing. It’s vital to stay on top of the changes. But it’s also difficult with all the other responsibilities and tasks on the go. Policy changes, court decisions, and emerging research all need noting and sifting, and you need alerting. Edvance is the ear on the ground and the voice — to you and for you — in this changing context. It’s our goal to create a broader conversation about education in Canada in partnership with you and other organizations. Together, we’ll pursue and promote Christian education for the public good.

In the midst of the relatively new and increasingly bloody American Civil War, American journalist Horace Greeley, writing in the New York Tribune, called directly for President Lincoln to more vigorously enforce the recently passed Confiscation Acts of 1861 and 1862. The Confiscation Acts were designed to allow Northern Union forces to confiscate property from the breakaway Southern Confederate states during the United States Civil War. This may sound to us like an unsavoury but perhaps necessary set of actions to take during wartime, but there is more to the story.

The Tension with Teeming

There is a word in Genesis 1:20 that continually captures my imagination: “And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures.’” Various Bible translations use the words “swarm” or “abound” in lieu of “teeming”. The original Hebrew word is pronounced sharats and means “to wriggle”.

Leadership That Does the Right Thing

I have to confess that I am not a huge sports fan. Familial duty means that I have to cheer for the Toronto Maple Leafs, even though they no longer have my favourite player on their team (it wasn’t Marner’s fault), and I totally jumped on the Blue Jays bandwagon last season and got myself some merch during their run to the World Series. So it is a little odd for me to use a sports figure to talk about leadership, but here we are.
